Dr.Surekha Bhat is presently Assistant professor in Biochemistry at the Melaka Manipal Medical College (Manipal Campus), Manipal , India . She has taught Chemistry and Biology to premedical students and is currently teaching biochemistry to I year MBBS students in her institute. She graduated with a B.Sc (Botany, Zoology, Chemistry) from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College , Udupi, under the auspices of the Mangalore University , Mangalore , India in 1992 and secured the fifth rank in the university. Thereafter, she did her postgraduation in Biochemistry at Kasturba Medical College , Manipal and obtained her M.Sc degree from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE, a deemed university), Manipal, in 1995.

 

Her interest in pyramids made her pursue scientific research studies on pyramids modeled after the Great Pyramid of Giza. In June 2005, MAHE awarded her a Ph.D for her thesis entitled  “Alterations in the status of oxidative stress and antioxidant profile in rats housed in pyramid model”

She has published her work in the Indian Journal of Experimental Biology and the oxford journal Evidence based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The details of her publications are as follows

 She was awarded the Dr.TMA Pai Gold medal for excellence in medical research by MAHE in the year 2005 for her paper ‘Effect of housing rats within a pyramid on stress parameters’.

 

She is actively involved in cocurricular and extracurricular events of the university and is presently the cultural secretary of the MAHE Cultural Coordination committee. She has also been a resource person for a few of the sessions in the ‘Student evaluation workshop’ organized by the department of Medical Education, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and the Treasurer of the committee for the organization of the 20th National convention of SPIC MACAY in May 2005 at MAHE.
