Some researchers believe this skull was carved during the Hongshan period which flourished in northeast China from 5000 to 3000 B.C. This period is also known as the late Neolithic. Notice that the skull is elongated. Artificial deformation of craniums or head flattening of infants was performed by many early cultures in diverse areas including Central America, Africa, and Asia. Was this done for social status or for other reasons?
